2022 Preseason Honors & Awards


ATLANTA – The ASUN Conference announced the 2022 Volleyball Preseason All-Conference Awards on Thursday afternoon as voted on by the league's 14 head coaches. FGCU, which is coming off a 27-6 season and its second conference crown, was chosen to defend its title after receiving 13 first-place votes and 191 total points.

FGCU's Erin Shomaker, the two-time reigning ASUN Player of the Year, was again selected as the Preseason Player of the Year while teammate Chelsey Lockey was voted Preseason Setter of the Year. North Florida's Rocio Moro rounded out the superlative accolades by taking home the Preseason Defensive Player of the Year award after being tabbed as the Defensive Player of the Year for the second consecutive season in 2021.

Jacksonville State, last year's ASUN Championship Runner-Up, came in second in the Coaches Poll with 167 voting points with Kennesaw State (157) coming in third. Lipscomb (138) and Liberty (134) rounded out the top five while league newcomer Queens scooped up the final first-place vote.


2022 ASUN Volleyball Preseason All-Conference Team
Erin Shomaker, OH, Sr., FGCU* – The two-time reigning ASUN Player of the Year Shomaker recorded double-digit kills in 29 matches for a team-leading and a league-leading 413 kills, 3.86 kills per set, which ranked No. 36 in the nation. She led the ASUN in points per set (4.47) while carrying a .280 hitting percentage and leading the team in aces (33).

Lily Felts, OH, Sr., FGCU – Felts was named to the All-SEC Team (2020-21) with Tennessee before transferring to FGCU. The outside hitter ended the 2021 slate with career-high marks in kills (285), digs (297) and blocks (63), while ranking second in aces (17), third in kills and fifth in blocks for the Volunteers. 

Chelsey Lockey, S, Sr., FGCU – As the top setter for FGCU with 1,118 assists, Lockey ranked second in the ASUN for assists per set (10.35; 39th nationally) while also ranking 29th nationally for total assists. The Preseason Setter of the Year posted a season-high 54 assists at North Florida and had six matches with 40 or more. 

Zoe Gonzales, MB, Sr., Jacksonville State – Gonzales was named to the All-Conference Second Team in 2021 after leading JSU with 91 total blocks. The Longmont, Colo., native registered 161 kills and a .375 hit percentage while recording a league-leading .404 hit percentage in conference play to go along with 60 blocks against ASUN foes.

Lena Kindermann, OH, Gr., Jacksonville State – Kindermann is back on the preseason award list after hauling in ASUN First Team All-Conference, All-Tournament and All-Academic honors in 2021. She started in all 32 matches for JSU and led the Gamecocks with a team-high 393 kills and 3.64 kills per set (both second in ASUN).

Emma Schurfranz, RS, Sr., Kennesaw State – A two-time ASUN All-Conference selection, including a First Team nod in 2021, Schurfranz led the squad a year ago in total kills with 363 (fifth in ASUN) and ranked fourth in the conference with 3.39 scores per set. Her .283 hitting percentage was ranked ninth among league leaders last season. 

Rocio Moro, L, Jr., North Florida – The Preseason Defensive Player of the Year and current back-to-back Defensive Player of the Year Moro paced the ASUN in digs (597) and digs per set (4.85) in 2021. She finished 11th in the country in digs and 39th overall in Division I for digs per set. The libero reached double-digit digs in 30 of UNF's 33 matches.

For the 11th consecutive year, the ASUN took to social media to poll the fans for the conference preseason superlative awards. Out of a total of 1,390 total votes cast, Anna Katherine Griggs of North Alabama was the fan's choice for Preseason Player of the Year with 194 while Meg Mersman of Lipscomb garnered the Fan-Voted Preseason Defensive Player of the Year award with 130. Jacksonville State's Claire Ochs rounded out the group landing the Fan-Voted Preseason Setter of the Year honor with 69 votes.
